Carols by candlelight 2018

On Friday 23 November it was wonderful to see the community come together in overwhelming attendance of the inaugural Music Voyage Karkloof Country Club Carols by Candlelight event.

It was a cold and misty evening, but rather than act as a deterrent, the terrible weather contributed to the convivial atmosphere. Money was raised, candles were lit, carols were heartily sung, and Christmas spirits were lifted.

This event was just one example of how Music Voyage is performing musical miracles and bringing together talented youth and teachers from different socio-economic backgrounds – the excellently executed performances by the Marimba bands and Marching Band set the tone for the rest of the evening.

This was followed up with performances and the Nativity by various Music Voyage musicians and choirs from Thembelihle, Howick Prep, Triandra, Yarrow Gartmore and Hawkstone Primary School along with the Howick Choristers who generously came to the party while the children were taking their dinner break.

Thank you’s..

Special thanks to local musicians Carol Solomon (violin), David Solomon (trombone), Josh Bull and Warren Napier (guitar) for spontaneously taking up their instruments and accompanying the chorus, taking it to the next level.

Thank you to Oasis Pietermaritzburg and the Harvard Street Pick ‘n Pay in Howick for the sponsorship of the children’s food and drink.

This was truly a collaborative effort. Fiona Bull continues to do an incredible job and her work with the Music Voyage children is greatly appreciated. Along with Fiona, came Jane Tongue and Jacky Stander (Howick Prep) who assisted in the evenings programme. Mary Gray does wonderful work in our schools and she performed her own Christmas miracle instigating the successful event, and rallying friends and family to assist. Steve from the Karkloof Country Club went above and beyond by inviting us to use the gorgeous venue for the event.

Music Voyage is grateful to the Village Talk and its readers for their support, and for shining a light on their worthy cause.

This was an event worth repeating!
